About Dr. Jon Chandler

Dr. Chandler is a clinical, forensic and medical psychologist specializing in individual, couples, and families of all ages. He utilizes highly individualized methods of mental health treatment. Currently, Dr. Chandler provides psychiatric assessment, brief therapy, and medication management with Access Health Louisiana, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) serving in the Greater New Orleans Area, and many locations throughout Louisiana. He also maintains a small private practice.

After graduating from Texas SouthernUniversity with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and English, he received his Master of Arts and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis on Multicultural studies at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University.

Dr. Chandler had been working as a clinical psychologist for many years, when he decided to expand his current skill set. While his education was already extensive, he believed that adding a few tools to his belt might benefit his patients, even more. Therefore, Dr. Chandler enrolled in and completed a Post-Doctoral Masters of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology at Alliant International University. Then, he passed the medical examination to become licensed and able to prescribe psychotropic medications in select states. Given the options at the time (New Mexico, Louisiana, Illinois, Public Health Service, Indian Health Service, U.S. military, and Guam) he and his family chose New Orleans, Louisiana to start their new chapter. Many more states have passed legislation allowing highly trained, clinical psychologists with a post-doctoral MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology with successful completion of the national and state examinations, to become medically licensed and practice in their states. Idaho and Iowa are the most recent additions, with Texas, Mississippi, New Jersey, Florida, and Alabama close on their heels. For more information, go here.

Over the past decade, he has enjoyed working with a wide range of clients. First, he conducted psychotherapy with adult clients with the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center's Mental Health Department. There, he became involved in the S.T.O.P. Partner Abuse Program and co-facilitated groups for female survivors of domestic violence. Additionally, he saw clients from the Jeffrey Goodman Special Care Clinic who had recently seroconverted (discovered they are HIV+).

Then, he worked with children, ages 5-11 in a school setting through the West County Counseling Center. Conducting group and individual therapy, he helped children gain the confidence they needed to perform social tasks, created a safe place for kids of divorce to talk about their experiences, and gathered groups of kids to share stories about loved ones they lost. For this, he worked closely with school staff, parents, and teachers.

Dr. Chandler has also worked with populations for which

many professionals find challenging: Dually Diagnosed Adults (Adults with a Mental Health Disorder and an Addiction) and Adults with a history of Sexual Offenses at Sharper Future Clinic in Los Angeles, California. This led to a continuing interest in helping underserved populations such as: LGBTQ+ folks, children, and inmate-patients. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship and post-licensure work with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). There, he provided individual, group rehabilitative therapy and psychiatric consultation to Incarcerated Male and Female Offenders at State and County Facilities.

He also loves teaching and giving back to the therapeutic community. Dr. Chandler has had the privilege of serving as an adjunct Professor and Psychodiagnostic Supervisor for Argosy University's Clinical PsyD program in Orange County, and he was an adjunct professor and had the amazing chance to become one of the founding members of the first-ever MA in Clinical Psychology, LGBT-Affirmative Psychology at Antioch University.

As you can probably tell, he believes in multicultural awareness and acceptance. So much so that he completed a dissertation project and has given dozens of professional presentations on the subject of gender and sexual identity and overall cultural competency in mental and physical healthcare. Such presentations include but are not limited to: Lesbian and Gay Psychotherapy Association (LAGPA) of Southern California, PFLAG, The Guidance Center and many other settings, if you are interested in attending upcoming presentations, please email for details.
